Jon Clancy

Anatomy Nerd, Massage Therapist, EMT, Yoga Teacher, Outdoor Enthusiast

I spent the first part of my career learning how to run adventures; I was a raft guide, a summer camp counselor, a wilderness therapy guide, and a lifeguard. Over the years, I became more and more drawn to the medical side of things, attaining greater and greater first aid and medical qualifications.

Eventually, I landed a Job with SOLO Wilderness Medical Schools, traveling around the country and teaching outdoor leaders how to respond to emergency situations in classes that included Wilderness First Aid, Wilderness First Responder, and Wilderness EMT. I absolutely loved my job, made friends all over the country, and spent more than 10,000 hours training some very cool people!

But all that travelĀ got to me

I began looking into ways to have a greater sense of community. So I came back to Asheville, where I’d started rafting all those years ago, on a quest to find grounding. I spent two full months studying Yoga at the Asheville Yoga Center, and I enrolled in classes for clinical massage and bodywork

As I wrapped up my now 1,000 hours of training, I considered how I might apply my clinical background as an EMT, my kinesiology and exercise training as a yoga teacher and my massage therapy license, I realized that there was nowhere for me to work without holding back some of my knowledge.

That’s how Active Asheville was born. I set about creating informative material that would be of value and service to my friends and clients- information I would have liked to have all of those times when I experienced accidents, pain, or stiffness.

And I also met my wife here in Asheville!

Asheville has given me a community and a new sense of purpose! Every day, I am reminded of how grateful I am to have a town that supports small business owners, that has a playful, adventurous spirit, and that has been so welcoming!
